Lesson procedure
1. Students will visit one (or more) of the following websites prior to coming to class in order to prepare to solve percent problems by utilizing the proportion method.
2. At the beginning of class, the following video will be shown to reinforce what the students read. The video will be stopped after the third sample problem as the rest of it pertains to percents in word problems (which will be covered in a separate lesson).
3. Using the site PercProp, which is a percent calculator set up in the proportion format, the students will enter the information from a list of problem onto a provided worksheet and into the calculator. They will allow the calculator to give them the answer, which they will record on the worksheet. They will complete 3 worksheets and will have 6 minutes to complete each one. Once the students have completed the problem sheet given to them, it will be checked. If 90% or more of the answers are correct, then that means the students have correctly set up the problem. If they score less than 90%, then the students will receive remedial instruction and re-practice.
4. Students who successfully complete the previous step will then move on to solving percent proportion problems, without the percent calculator, using the following sites:
Find the Part
Find the Whole
Find the Percent
For each of the three sections, the students will record their work and answer onto a provided worksheet in addition to on the website. They will be allotted 6 minutes for each section. The student must correctly answer 90% or more of the problems in order to master that section. If they are below 90%, they will receive remedial instruction (based upon a review of the worksheet to determine what problem they are having) and re-practice.
5. Students who master all three lessons are ready for the final quiz.
