Multiplying and Dividing Fractions
Introduction: This is a modified flipped classroom lesson. Students will watch videos to demonstrate the procedure to multiply and divide fractions. Then they will practice by solving problems similar to those shown in the video. The teacher will be available to guide the students on the practice problems. Also, students will be able to pair up or gather in small groups to assist each other. When a student has completed all ten lessons, they will take a quiz. The student needs to pass with an 80%.
Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: Middle School Mathematics
Objectives: Students will be able to, with an 80% or higher success rate:
Standards Addressed:
CCSS.Math.Content.5.NF.B.4
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
CCSS.Math.Content.5.NF.B.7
Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.
Relative Advantage: (What are the clear benefits of this new way of doing things?) Since students are at different levels, this will allow students to progress at their own pace. The videos can be re-watched by students who do not comprehend on the first viewing. If students miss a day, they will be able to get caught up.
Timeline: Students will be allotted one day for each video lesson for a total of 10 days.
Materials: Students will practice using IXL.com.
http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-5
Grouping Strategies: There are 10 computers available for students. Students can work individually, in pairs or a small group of three. If a student is struggling and needs more time than I can dedicate without taking away from other students, they will be paired with a student who has already mastered that skill.
Learning Activities: Click here to go to the learning activities.
Assessment: For each video lesson, a student will work on an IXL lesson with problems of the same form as those in the video. Students must score an 80 or better before moving on to the next lesson.
Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: Students with hearing difficulties will be provided videos with close-captioning.
